GM's Review The year started with another flood and gives rise to some speculation on the future of rice cultivation in the riverain areas of Mahaica, Mahaicony and Abary. But by the second crop we were well on the road to one of the better years in the rice sector. Production was 307,036 tonnes compared with 273,237 tonnes in 2005. Export for 2006 was 204,576 tonnes of rice valued at US $ 54,622559.00. This surpassed that for 2005 by 22,401 tonnes and US$ 8,490,410.00 in value. The EU continues to be the major market with almost 50 % of the total exports; CARICOM is the second largest block with approximately 36%. During this year we have seen the implementation of the 24 million Euros EU Support Programme for the CARIFORUM Rice Sector. With the establishment of the Guyana Rice Project Management Unit, we will see Guyana benefiting from 11.7 million Euros. In addition GRDB was successful in its application for a one million Euros grant for the production of improved seed to the sector. Another project that will see significant benefit to the rice sector is the Agriculture Support Service Programme (ASSP) where in excess of $2 million will be spent in the areas of rice seed development, farmers training and the development of the Rice Research Station. This has started with the implementation of the Farmers Field School in most of the Water Users Association areas established under this programme. GRDB was also involved in the training of farmers with a contract from the Poor Rural Community Support Service Programme in Regions 2 and 3. This included establishment and management of Rice-fish fields ......... To Download The Entire GRDB 2006 Annual Report CLICK HERE. [File size 26 MB. PDF] |
